Like many good things Quintessential Dance wasn’t planned. It started out of necessity with an idea, a home Bose Radio, a factory floor, and a small group of dedicated dancers.
Berkshire County (western Massachusetts) had few dances
and the dance community was too small to support the use of a DJ.
In the spring of 2005 Tom Trimarchi wrote the
precursor
of “The
Brain”. It was a simple program that produced a “playlist” in a
format that Apple iTunes and Windows Media Player could play.
The idea was that
a computer could do the music selection much better then most DJs and DJs were
too expensive for small dance communities anyway.
The simple selection algorithm worked flawlessly and
proved to be smarter then most DJs. So in the summer of that year a small group
of dedicated dancers gathered one evening, on a factory floor, with a note book
PC hooked to a home Bose Radio and had a wonderful and memorable dance.
Moody Brown gave a Quick Step lesson that night and has
been a favorite teacher in Berkshire County every since.
Things just evolved from there. The community supported
and nurtured the efforts to bring dance to the Berkshires.
Quintessential Dance implemented a program to grow the local dance community by providing excellence in sound, music, and environment. Quintessential Dance uses Bose Professional Sound Systems. These fill a Ballroom with a much more even sound level then conventional sound systems. One can actually stand directly in front of them and talk yet dance at the other end of the Ballroom. The music is provided via The Brain. And, Quintessential Dance was instrumental in reopening many dance venues - including some that were closed for many Decades.
For
the entire first year Quintessential Dance provided High Quality weekly Dances and
Dance
Lessons for free.
It continues to provide High Quality Dance events at
affordable prices, provides dance lessons at multiple locations, offers free
lessons for
High School & College Students, and includes the dance community in
the teaching process. Beginners dancing with advanced dancers have a much
greater propensity to succeed and to join the dance community.
Quintessential Dance continues to provide music (via The Brain) at no charge for selected fund raising and community events.
